Charleston Women's Medical Center together with [[Greenville Women's Clinic]] and [[William Lynn]], MD filed a lawsuit against the state, challenging new abortion clinic licensing laws. The case was argued on January 27, 2000 and decided on August 15, 2000. Dr. Michael J. Engel, DMD is the owner of Engel Dentistry which is located at 1318 Ashley River Road, immediately adjacent to the Charleston Women's Medical Center abortion business. According to a police report, a doctor from Charleston Women's Medical Center "is only allowed to use [the Dentist's] parking lot to access the backdoor to the women’s clinic."

Dr. Michael Engel was born and raised in Charleston. He was educated in Lowcountry public schools and earned a BS from the University of South Carolina in 1974. He received a MAT from The Citadel and his DMD from the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Engel is a member of the American Dental Association, the South Carolina Dental Association and the Olde Charlestowne Sertoma Club.
