Alison McCulloch

Alison McCulloch is a journalist. She has been a contract lecturer at Massey University in Wellington, New Zealand. As a journalist she has worked for many newspapers including The New Zealand Herald, The Dominion, The International Herald Tribune (Paris), The Denver Post and The New York Times. She currently resides in Ireland (April 2010).

Working as a Journalist

As a journalist for the New York Times McCulloch worked at 'the Book Review'. She reviewed both fiction and non-fiction, including multiple books about life in New Zealand and Austrailia for the native people of those countries, the Maori and Aboriginals.

ALRANZ

McCulloch is the current (as at March 2009) Communications Officer for the Abortion Law Reform Association of New Zealand

WONAAC

McCulloch is a member of Women’s National Abortion Action Campaign, the breakaway group from ALRANZ.

In a WONAAC press release, McCulloch alleged:

“Right to Life... argues that the law should give full human rights to fertilized eggs... It’s not just about abortion. It never is. It’s about a minority morals agenda that opposes sex education, contraception, civil unions and gay marriage. Embryos have human rights, gays and women don’t.”

However every human is a "fertilized egg". McCulloch implies that Right to Life believes that women and homosexual people have no human rights, however this is incorrect.

Anti-choice groups are NOT welcome at University of Auckland

Alison McCulloch is a member of the Facebook group, Anti-choice groups are NOT welcome at University of Auckland. The group makes the statement that all anti-choice groups spread mis-information and propaganda. It specifically accuses Prolife Auckland of being a "hate group", and states that Prolife Auckland has accused abortive women and abortionists of being murderers. These statements are all untrue and defamatory. The group's description follows:

"Anti-choice groups cause immense psychological harm to people who are already vulnerable. They spread mis-information and propaganda. They are a hate group who accuse people who have obtained abortions or have helped people obtain abortions as murderers. University should be a safe place. It will not be if they affiliate."

Praised Dame Margaret Sparrow

In a special feature in the May 2011 newsletter of the Abortion Law Reform Association of New Zealand entitled "Honouring Dame Margaret Sparrow", Alison McCulloch made the following statement honouring the former abortionist and president of ALRANZ:

"Margaret Sparrow is my hero. I don’t know how she has managed to keep up the fight for reproductive rights for as long as she has, in the face of the hostility and hatred that she has always endured. I first met her as a patient at the Parkview clinic in Wellington. I felt then, as I feel now, that she saved my life."
