Suzanne Cluett
Suzanne Cluett (born 1942 in in Enumclaw, died Jan. 2006, aged 63)
Peace Corps
Starting as a Peace Corps volunteer in Nepal during the mid-1960s, Cluett had long been devoted to working with women internationally on issues of health, education and empowerment. While in Nepal, Cluett met her husband, Dr. Chris Cluett, a scientist who works at the Seattle office of Battelle. Chris Cluett also served in Nepal during the first years of the Peace Corps. Both stayed in Nepal for an additional three years to work for the U.S. Agency for International Development.[1]
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
Hired in 1995 by Bill Gates, Sr., Cluett was the first non-family employee of what would eventually become the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Of Cluett Gates stated, "I was very fond of her. We operated for many years completely in parallel."[1]
Cluett was also the first employee at PATH, the Seattle organization that has launched and managed many of the Gates Foundation's most ambitious global health projects.
In 1968 Cluett and her husband returned from Nepal and settled nearby the home of Bill Gates, Sr. and his wife.
Planned Parenthood
From 2000 - 2001, Suzanne Cluett, then based in Seattle, WA, served on the Board of Directors for the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. Planned Parenthood is the largest abortion business in the U.S.A.[2]
Cluett and her husband were active supporters of Planned Parenthood. In October 2005, Cluett was honored at an event at which the Gates Foundation donated $1 million to Planned Parenthood of Western Washington to establish the Suzanne Cluett International Family Planning Endowment. The family-planning organization matched this with another $1 million, with perhaps more to come.[1]
