Certifying Consultant
As at 11 November, 2009, Iyengar was a Certifying Consultant at Wakefield Specialist Centre in Newtown, Wellington. Certifying consultants have the job of approving or disapproving a mother being permitted to have her pre-born child killed by abortion.[1]
Abortion Supervisory Committee
In May 2003 the ASC appointed a technical committee to advise it on the use of mifepristone for medical abortion in New Zealand. The technical committee was asked to develop guidelines and report back within three months. Vasudha Iyengar was a member/advisor of this sub-committee.[2]
Moina Simcock's Death
In June 2005, Vasudha Iyengar carried out elective surgery on Moina Simcock, 64. Fifteen days after the surgery Simcock was in hospital, and a week later she was dead; the victim of an overwhelming infection caused by a misdiagnosed hernia. The problem went undiagnosed for nearly a fortnight while Iyengar investigated "red herring" explanations for Moina Simcock's continuing pain and nausea.
A health commissioner's report released on 23 May, 2008 ruled that Iyengar failed to provide proper post-operative care after what should have been a straightforward laparoscopic operation.
Vasudha Iyengar was referred to the Medical Council for a competence review for her care of Moina Simcock and has apologised to the family of the victim.[3]
